Detox drinks come in different forms: waters, juices, smoothies, nondairy milks, and tonics, to name a few. Whether you’re looking to cleanse your body, increase your metabolism, improve digestion, boost your energy, prevent disease, balance blood sugar, or satisfy your tastebuds, detox drinks play a role in optimizing health.
Don’t waste your money on expensive pre-made drinks from local shops. Making your own detox drinks from fresh ingredients is super simple. Always be sure to use organic ingredients when possible to enhance detoxification. Acidic ingredients can further leach chemicals from plastics, so I recommend using glass jars.
Lemon stimulates the digestive tract to enhance digestion, promotes proper bile flow for fat digestion, and helps with weight loss. It alleviates constipation, gas, and bloating, and it’s packed with vitamin C. Lemon also helps regulate blood sugar and promotes an alkaline internal environment, combating the acidity caused by the Standard American Diet.
Ginger comes from the same family as turmeric. It contains antioxidants, has powerful anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects, and may be useful in the prevention and management of diabetes. Additionally, ginger helps lower blood glucose levels, insulin, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and body weight.
There are several varieties of mint. It comes from the same family as basil, oregano, rosemary, sage, and thyme. Mint is incredibly fragrant and has stimulating properties. It soothes the gastrointestinal tract, enhances digestion and bile flow for breaking down fats, and relieves gas and cramps. Mint, especially peppermint, has carminative, antispasmodic, antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Peppermint is helpful in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). If you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), do not use peppermint, or talk with your healthcare practitioner about appropriate consumption methods.
Water is the most prevalent molecule in the human body (50-70% of body weight) and is the most important nutrient because it plays such a critical role in cellular homeostasis. Biological fluids such as blood and lymph are primarily composed of water. Additionally, water acts as a transporter in the body. For example, nutrients are transferred out of the blood and into the interstitial space composed primarily of water. As your body detoxifies, cellular waste products dissolved in water can move into the blood for safe excretion.
