Habits are those things you do repeatedly without much thought as if you’re on autopilot (e.g. brushing you teeth). Take a moment to think about all the habits you have in your life. What things do you usually do each day?
You may notice that habits can be healthy (e.g. exercising, having a protein shake for breakfast, setting a sleep routine) or not-so-healthy (e.g. smoking). There’s good news though; even if you have habits that are not supporting your health, you can cultivate new healthy habits to replace them.
You may have ideas for new habits. If your list is long and overwhelming, break it down and focus on one healthy habit. Setting a SMART goal is a great place to start. Once you integrate the new habit into your routine, move on to the next habit. There’s no rush–quality over quantity will lead to the best results.
Implementing a new habit will take practice, but technology has a plethora of resources for you. I’m loving the Habits app created by the co-hosts, Jesse and Marni, of the Ultimate Health Podcast. This app is designed to help you adopt and implement new habits with ease. Jesse and Marni have taken the guesswork out of starting new habits and making them stick in a simple to use and effective app.
You’re not alone if you struggle with thinking of new habits. Or maybe you’re rockin’ the healthy habits and are out of ideas for new healthy habits (there’s always room for improvement). No worries, the Habits app includes over 100 ideas for you. Many are inspired from the topics discussed during episodes of the Ultimate Health Podcast. With experts such as Gretchen Rubin, the preloaded habits are sure to set you on the path toward wellness. Simply select one or a few that resonate most with you to start. The preloaded habits are broken down into categories, including nutrition, fitness, sleep, personal care, personal growth, and miscellaneous. How’s that for organization?
And for the creative types out there, the Habits app gives you the option to create your own.
Keeping a journal is helpful for tracking your progress. No need to scramble for little sheets of paper and unsharpened pencils with this app though. There’s a notes section built into the app. You can record anything from what’s working to where obstacles are showing up to recipes to favorite exercise routines to sleep quality; you’re the author!
Celebrating successes will motivate you to continue adopting and practicing new habits. Once again, the Habits app thought about this and integrated a tracking feature for you. The Personal Profile is the place to go to view the habits you’re currently practicing as well as those you already accomplished. Your Personal Profile is your best cheerleader: Look at all those healthy habits; you deserve a gold star!
Wondering how you’ll remember to practice your habit in progress? The Habits app enables you to set a daily reminder. Thank you, alarm, for helping me succeed.
